The F1 Ticket Price Index

A decade of Formula 1 ticket pricing reveals two very different stories: the calendar-wide cost of entry rose sharply, while established races barely moved after inflation.

The key insight

The calendar got more expensive. Established races barely did.

Looking at the Formula 1 calendar as it actually existed each season, the real cost of the cheapest ticket rose 53.4%. Restrict the comparison to a fixed cohort of established races, and the increase falls to just 2.6%.

The gap suggests changes to the composition and price mix of the F1 calendar have mattered far more than widespread above-inflation price increases at established races.

This study asks what it has actually cost to get into a Formula 1 Grand Prix over nine completed seasons, and separates two questions that are usually blended together: how much existing races have raised their own prices, and how much the calendar itself has changed.

Two indices are constructed from the same verified dataset. The Calendar Price Index measures the typical cheapest entry price across whatever races existed in a given season. The Like-for-Like Index restricts the comparison to a fixed cohort of eleven established races, each compared only against its own history.

The two indices diverge sharply, and that divergence is the finding. In real terms the calendar-wide measure rises 53.4% between 2017 and 2025, while the like-for-like measure rises 2.6% — close to flat against UK CPI.

The divergence is driven by calendar composition

North America is the sport's premium market

MediumF1-F004

Pooled 2023–2025, North American races average £271.74 for cheapest entry — and approximately £219 even with Las Vegas and Miami removed, around 35% above Europe.

Regional pooled means and medians across 67 race-years with usable cheapest-entry data.

Interpretation

The North American premium is broad-based rather than the product of two marquee events.

Caveat

Oceania's regional figure rests on only three race-years.

General Admission stayed available but stopped being cheap

GA was confirmed available at 84–94% of race-years with clear evidence in every season studied, while the average GA price rose from £77.79 to £164.31 — +57.8% in real terms.

Weekend access carries a 28% median premium

Across 88 strictly matched ticket pairs, the median premium for weekend access over Sunday-only is 28% (IQR +16.9% to +36.9%).

Pairs matched on race, season, ticket category and named grandstand where applicable.

Interpretation

The median is the reliable figure; the 42% mean is pulled up by a handful of outliers that look like labelling quirks.

Caveat

Matched pairs skew toward races with richer published ticket ladders.

Premium pricing

Where the premium actually sits

A common claim is that every new-era race carries a price premium. The evidence does not support that as stated.

The premium is concentrated

Las Vegas & Miami

Exclude those two races and the remaining new-era events price 14.8% below the established baseline for cheapest entry. The premium is a two-race phenomenon, not a structural feature of new races.

Las Vegas vs Monaco

The claim that Las Vegas is simply more expensive than Monaco holds only at the premium standard grandstand tier — where the two sit within 1% of each other. At the cheapest available tier, Monaco is the more expensive race.

Which race is “more expensive” depends entirely on which ticket tier you compare. Stating the tier is part of stating the finding.

The mean premium across the same 88 pairs is 42%, but it is pulled upward by a small number of outliers that appear to be ticket-labelling quirks rather than real pricing decisions. Where a distribution has structural outliers, the median is the honest headline — so 28% is what this study reports.

Matched pairs skew toward races that publish a richer ticket ladder, so this is a premium for races with detailed public pricing rather than for the full calendar.

Thin early-season coverage

Archived official ticketing pages were unavailable for 2017–2022, so prices for those seasons rely more heavily on contemporaneous press and specialist ticketing sources. Older season figures are directionally useful rather than precise.

2020 is a three-race season

Most 2020 races had no public ticket sales at all. The 2020 index point rests on three races and is flagged everywhere it appears rather than presented with equal weight.

Decomposition is arithmetic, not causal

The share of the real-terms rise attributable to calendar composition is an indicative decomposition of two constructed indices. It does not identify which specific races cause the effect.

Excluded comparisons

Race-level comparisons whose ticket products were not equivalent between the two years compared are excluded from publication and logged in the claims audit.

Method

How the research was conducted

Evidence standard

  • Face-value tickets only — resale marketplace prices are never used as primary evidence.
  • Where evidence was insufficient, the field is recorded as Unknown and logged. 503 such gaps are published rather than filled by estimation.
  • Every observation carries a confidence rating of High, Medium or Low.

Currency and inflation

  • Original transaction currencies are retained. Conversion uses historical annual-average rates for the season in question, never current rates.
  • Real-terms figures are re-stated in 2026 purchasing power using UK CPI.
  • 2026 is excluded from every trend, index and year-over-year figure: the season is in progress and no reliable annual exchange rate exists yet.

Comparability check

  • Before any two prices from different seasons are compared, the ticket duration and race-day scope must match — a Sunday race-day ticket is never compared against a three-day weekend pass.
  • Comparisons that fail this test are excluded from published race-level results and recorded in the claims audit with the reason.
